I. EVENT INTRODUCTION

The 7th annual SUPERACE ULTRA MARATHON TAIWAN is here! To allow more race participants to enjoy and experience a SUPERACE ULTRA MARATHON, this year, aside from the ‘3 Day Elite Race’ which complies with the international multi-day race standards, and the ‘1 Day Race’ which was introduced last year, SUPERACE ULTRA MARATHON has introduced a ‘3 Day Challenge Race’. Challenge Race participants will have the luxury to only need to carry mandatory race equipment for one day, (the evernt organizers will provide equipment transport services for the other days), ) this will allow race participants interested in the ‘3 Day Elite Race’ to experience a less demanding 3-day race and gain a better understanding of the equipment involved and the fitness levels required for a SUPERACE Ultra Marathon.

We’ve arranged for new challenges in this year’s course! SUPERACE will lead runners through the Jinshuiying Historic Trail, built during the Japanese occupation of Taiwan, through the Central Mountain Range to the Eastern coast. Runners will pass the Alangyi Historic Trail, Xuhai, and Provincial Highway 26. Runners will climb to peaks of more than 1,450 meters and descent to river beds at sea level; along the way race participants will be greated by the mountains and the sea as they pass wet tropical forests and gravel coasts. One might even hear the songs of the Paiwan people. The diverse terrain will test both the limits of your stamina and will; it will also test your understanding of this land that is Taiwan! Come with SUPERACE in January 2019 to test your limits and discover the beauty of Formosa with your own two feet.

【Taiwan Station 3-Day Consecutive Race 119K Course】

Total climb 3366m: Dahan Forest Trail (Race Start) →→ Jinshuiying Historic Trail → Kalapang → Lower Nantian Village → Alangyi Historic Trail → Xuhai → Manzhou Township → Jia-E Highway → Fengchuisha → Longpan Park → Kenting Youth Activity Center (Finish Line)

The oldest, most mystical trail – Jinshuiying Historic Trail

You stand at the start, awaiting to face the first challenge of the race: crossing the Central Mountain Range! First, step into Dahan Forest Trail and let the Jinshuiying Historic Trail guide your path. Since being built during Japanese occupation, this is the most used and oldest path that crosses the Central Mountain Range. Aside from your own breath, can you hear the footsteps of those who came before you ringing through the mountains and forest as you run? Take a closer look and you’ll see the hidden marks of history. The wet tropical climate has resulted in some unique vegetation and hidden animals lurking in each corner, awaiting your arrival.

Kalapang, Taitung Course

Race from 200m above sea level through the mountains to an altitude of 1,450m and pass the Gu-alun Bridge that has stood since the Qing Dynasty, then drop down to the Dawuxi Riverbed that’s less than 40m above sea level.

You are a passerby traveling through the creek while the Kalapang tribe has been rooted in this area for nearly a century. Formerly known as “Jugachilai”, the Paiwan people were forcibly located to Jiunantian by the Japanese but returned to their original location as they were unable to adapt to life by the sea. Kalapang means “Orange jessamine” in the Paiwan tribe; it is the home of cloud panther. Compared to searching for the shadows of orange jessamine or cloud panther, the varied sizes of rocks in the creek bed will severely challenge your focus. Keep an eye out for rocks that can act as footholds and don’t trip while sometimes treading on logs and trudging through the water at other times. “Splash!” The splashing waters of the cool creek symbolizes the source of life along with the colorful legends of the Kalapang Tribe. The path guides your steps to the Pacific Ocean as you exit the mountains and enter the embrace of the ocean at Dawu Township. You take a right and continue south.

Blue Highway – Xuhai Grassland Course

Follow the highway and before you know it, you’re in a coast filled with pebbles.

Xuhai, if you’re lucky, is a place where you’ll catch a glimpse of the legendary view: “the sunrise and the ocean”. The yellow sun slowly rises from the surface of the Pacific Ocean. The golden rays penetrate the tranquility of te blue morning as you blink away the sleep from your eyes. “Wow!” You gasp in awe at the majesty of nature. The sun rises, shining its light on the small fishing village in the Southeastern corner of Taiwan. The cresting waves on the left seem to increase in intensity; on your right is a 5-story tall cliff with traces of stubborn vegetation and displays of spiral patterns formed by pressure on volcanic lava from eruptions more than a million years ago.

Manzhou Township

Take a right and you’ve left the seaside to return to the mountains. Manzhou Township is located at the tail end of the Central Mountain Range. Originally named “vangecul” in the Paiwan language or “báng-sut” in Taiwanese Hokkien, it was changed to the Japanese phonetic pronunciation of “Manzhou” during Japanese occupation.

The mountainous, hilly terrain stands at an average altitude below 700m. As you run on the gentle highway, enjoy the smooth and shapely mountains not far away. The path is lined with low shrubbery with some low-rise housing. Passionate villagers and black dogs cheer for you, waving their arms in rhythm with the betel nut trees not far away.

 【Jia-E Highway】

Continue from Manzhou early in the morning and the shrubbery will gradually disappear from sights. The line of mountains in the horizon gradually flatten and your perspective begins to broaden. After passing Gangkouxi, Provincial Highway 26 merges with Jia-E Highway – from the beautiful coastal highway between Jialeshui to Cape Eluanbi. The path is lined with pandanus trees and between the pandanus foliage on the left, you can barely hear the call of the sea.

Fengchuisha ─ Longpan Park ─ Downtown Kenting

Follow Jia-E Highway southbound to tour the unique sights along the Southeastern coast.

The white sands of Fengchuisha abruptly come into view. The area contains coral reef topography that combines red earth and sand from geographical layers that have been corroded over long periods and result in the white sandy view today.

Continue along to Longpan Park. The grass filled marina and limestone platforms, gaze out at the blue skies and Pacific Ocean.

Take one last look at the ocean! At the next fork in the road is an unassuming trail that sets you on the last part of your journey. Cut through this trail to the south end of Kenting and arrive at the eastern coast. Head north towards the sound of people, cars, and the familiar smell of Kenting. Soon after you’ll reach the finish line……
